Back in the day, before my restaurant choices were based on whether the establishment offered crayons, chicken nuggets, and a giant mouse or talking tree, I used to frequent a local cantina. The “naked” door closer on their ladies room door drove me nuts, so one night I showed up with a closer cover, screws, and a set of hex wrenches. As you can probably imagine, they looked at me like I had two heads and made me hand everything over to the bartender.
I see naked closers everywhere, and I was thrilled when LCN came out with the snap-on cover for the 4040 series closers. I recently did a walk-through with a very experienced hardware installer and he told me how much he loves the new cover. It makes installation and adjustment much easier, and frankly, if it makes the installers happy, it makes me happy.
There may be facilities that would prefer the traditional (preferably metal) cover due to vandalism / closer-cover-theft, but for many applications it saves time, keeps the door openings looking good, and prevents people from tampering with exposed valves and screws. Hey Lori, i had this feeling at one time or another i would see this all so famous “naked” LCN 4040XP show up on this site,
about the bartender situation, seems with public closers the owners don’t like patrons to go near or even touch the door in the area around the hinges or closer. because they see many people per day (hundreds) they dont know if your going to vandalize the door or well what you were attempting, put a cover on a naked closer.
I really wish the snap-on cover was around when i was in middle and high school/technical school, (no more allen wrenches or looking for the correct size (3/32) just to put 2 screws in the cover just to have kids later on PULL THE COVER OFF!
with schools and closer cover theft, I dont know if its just they think the ABS plastic box is like a souvenir for that grade level/school or what, but the middle and high schools i attended just about EVERY LCN(both 4040(std version) and 4010 they had NO cover,
both my 9th and 10th grades of both schools were spent collecting the covers (off the floor) and either putting them back on the closers or adding them to the growing pile of covers in maintenance office.
i still think LCN should market the cover for the 4010 series as well, those also have that tendency to lose the cover while just closing the door.
